Decide entonces comprarse uno nuevo para no perecer bajo la gélida temperatura de San Petersburgo. Por fin, ha encontrado un sentido a su vida de sacrificios: lograr el dinero suficiente para adquirir un nuevo capote. Sin embargo, la adquisición del capote tendrá para él consecuencias nefastas.
