La casa real impidió su publicación debido a la críticas de Jerónimo de Mendieta a la colonización del Nuevo Mundo y el texto no fue conocido hasta 1870. Aunque con cierto paternalismo, Mendieta denuncia en este libro el afán desmedido de riqueza que se oculta tras los propósitos cristianos de ciertos conquistadores y traza un panorama idílico en el que las reacciones de los aborígenes ante la llegada de los españoles resulta distante de la realidad.
