Las primeras noticias que conocemos de los bandoleros surgen en el siglo XVI. Estos aparecieron en aquellas zonas que presentaban unas características muy concretas para que pudieran moverse en libertad y sin ser hostigados por las fuerzas del orden, es decir, las montañas, el escenario perfecto para el pillaje y el robo. Existe mucha literatura sobre ellos, de hecho los escritores románticos franceses e ingleses mitificaron a muchos bandoleros en sus obras.
