Roth aceptó de buen grado el encargo puesto que el periplo que estaba a punto de emprender representaba la ocasión para conocer de cerca un país por el que siempre se había sentido atraído y que, tras la revolución, suscitaba también el interés de la mayoría de intelectuales europeos.
