The objective of the book is to resolve one of the many enigmas posed by the history of Ibero-Romance dialects in general and Spanish in particular - the strange palatalization (unconditioned, sporadic and incomplete) of /s/. Over and above this central concern, the book also pursues a fundamentally theoretical aim inspired by two preoccupations of a metalinguistic nature, the delimitation of historical linguistics and the circumstantial nature of linguistic investigation.

Based on the idea that all forms of knowledge are interconnected and that the human mind weaves them together naturally, this book encourages the incorporation of art education into all other forms of education instead of keeping them separate and compartmentalized. It urges parents and teachers to make art education an integral part of children's daily lives, arguing that by combining various disciplines, such as health and photography or geometry and painting, children will develop into smarter and more creative individuals. Since the publication of the still very valuable Biblioteca histórica de la filología by Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, conde de la Viñaza (Madrid, 1893), our knowledge of the history of the study of the Spanish language has grown considerably.
