Jean-François Elslander nació en Bruselas el 19 de septiembre de 1865. A los diecinueve años empezó a trabajar como maestro de escuela en Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. A los veinticuatro se traslada a vivir a Watermael-Boitsford, a una colonia de artistas bohemios y libertarios. Allí conoce en 1910 a Georges Giroux, al que introduce en los ambientes artísticos belgas y ayuda a inaugurar la GGG (Galería Georges Giroux) que contribuyó de forma decisiva a modernizar el arte belga de principios del siglo XX, con exposiciones como las de James Ensor, Toulouse Lautrec, Edouard Manet, Kandinsky,...
