Sinopsis del Libro

Esta historia comienza hace casi trescientos años en una vieja taberna junto a las costas del Cantábrico y acaba en las orillas del Río de la Plata, cuando la revolución emancipadora ponía fin al dominio español. Cuenta la aventura del vasco Bernabé Alcorta que cruzó el océano y recaló en una Montevideo convulsa donde vivió las penurias de la ciudad sitiada, los sobresaltos de las invasiones inglesas y fue testigo del triunfo de la revolución de mayo y del éxodo en redota del pueblo oriental. Un temprano encuentro con José Artigas marcó su destino y lo enfrentó a una decisión difícil. Debió elegir entre la lealtad al caudillo admirado o mantenerse fiel a su patria y a su rey. Narrar nuestro pasado desde esa desacostumbrada perspectiva es un hallazgo de esta novela y el origen de sus mejores méritos. Último viajero de la nada es también una saga familiar que escucha las voces de los muertos con la complicidad de una abuela casi centenaria y de un nieto con veleidades de escritor que heredó la sonrisa de los Alcorta. La domesticidad de un presente lleno de guiños convive con personajes legendarios como el Brigadier Cosme Damián Churruca muerto en la batalla de Trafalgar y el cartógrafo y naturalista Félix de Azara.

As in real life, not every immigrant coming to the United States makes it, in this novel; Rosario did, but not her sister, Berta. Some characters in this novel are truly loveable, others quite detestable; all nevertheless are quite human. The reader weeps at times, is angry at times, rejoices at times, but at the close you will find a new meaning for what is meant for a Latina Mistress.
