A través de Suma crítica, Yurkievich perfila el proceso de la modernidad literaria en hispanoamericana, caracterizando sus etapas y sus escritores representativos: Darío, Lugones, Herrera y Reissig, López Velarde, Gabriela Mistral para el modernismo; Huidobro, Vallejo, Neruda, Girondo para la vanguardia.
