En este segundo tomo, Braudel relata en el capítulo "Los acontecimientos, la política y los hombres" una historia de hechos, de oscilaciones breves. Se llega a la distinción dentro del tiempo de la historia, de un tiempo geográfico, un tiempo social y un tiempo individual.
