From the Sin-é Café to the Black Hills

Sinopsis del Libro

Libro From the Sin-é Café to the Black Hills

Eamonn Wall arrived in the United States in the 1980s as part of a wave of young, educated immigrants who became known as the "New Irish." In this book he comments on his own experiences and those of his generation, who identify as much with contemporary ethnic and immigrant America as they do with the long-settled Irish American community. Wall's starting point is the now-closed Sin-é Café in New York's East Village, which was a hangout in the early 1990s for expatriate Irish musicians, actors, and writers. He comments on the poetry, fiction, essays, and memoirs of both the New Irish and Americans of Irish heritage, locating them within a literary and historical context. But this is also a deeply personal book in which Wall wrestles with his own identity as an Irishman living in America, raising his children as Americans and learning to love the American landscape, from the streets of Manhattan to the western hills of Nebraska.

Protofeminismo, erotismo y comida en La lozana andaluza

Libro Protofeminismo, erotismo y comida en La lozana andaluza

With a grounding in the current theoretical understanding of Renaissance feminism, this work presents an examination of Francisco Delicado's profeminist position in the context of what are currently described as individualist and relational models. The individualist model proposes an autonomy of women in relation to men, law and politics, while the relational explores what women are and do in contrast to men. Delicado's text offers the possibility of invoking both models simultaneously.

Although the three authors studied, Ana Maria Matute, Carmen Martin Gaite, and Esther Tusquets, are sophisticated intellectuals, they have chosen fairy tales and texts from other marginalized genres originally for female consumption (such as the novela rosa and the Hollywood women's picture) as the major intertexts in their novels for adults as well as in their fictions for children. Against the backdrop feminist theory and recent critical studies of fairy tales and children's literature, Solino studies the works of these authors as "gendered texts." Solino's book opens with a chapter that...
