Las historias seleccionadas en este libro describen cómo funcionó el sistema esclavista africano en Costa Rica, contado por sus propias víctimas. Hubo particularidades porque no fue igual la vida de los esclavos y sus amos en los ingenios azucareros de Cuba o en las plantaciones de algodón de Estados Unidos, que en Costa Rica donde el cacao ocupaba muy poca mano de obra, razón por la cual la esclavitud fue destinada fundamentalmente al trabajo doméstico.
