En el primer libro de la colección se compilan una serie de artículos que abordan, desde distintas perspectivas, algunos de los enigmas que aquella geografía especulativa planteó a los expedicionarios, que buscaron resolverlos con sus sorprendentes viajes, en los que se conjugaban los intereses, ambiciones, ilusiones, imaginarios, mentiras y conocimientos que con tanto cuidado luego fueron registrados en los maravillosos mapas producidos a partir del siglo XVI.

La historia de Nayarit muestra rasgos muy particulares del occidente del país, justamente allí donde el altiplano "se deshace en tierras húmedas y calientes y se despeña en barrancas interminables" para dar paso a la diversidad característica dominante del clima que define una serie de pequeñas regiones distintas entre sí. Esta obra prolonga el Estudio histórico del estado de Nayarit, de Everardo Peña Navarro, publicado entre 1946 y 1955, y es resultado de numerosos libros y artículos que han desentrañado el devenir de la entidad.
