Jean-François Elslander nació en Bruselas el 19 de septiembre de 1865. A los diecinueve años empezó a trabajar como maestro de escuela en Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. A los veinticuatro se traslada a vivir a Watermael-Boitsford, a una colonia de artistas bohemios y libertarios.
